Topic: The Reconstruction of the Constitution – The birth of the 14th amendment
The passage and ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868 fundamentally changed the nature of the US Constitution, by clearly defining the nature of citizenship, and establishing due process and the equal protection of the law as the law of the land. However, its passage and ratification was the result of bitter conflict between a radical Congress and President Andrew Johnson, a passionate opponent of equal rights for the newly freed African Americans. This struggle ultimately led to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and the adoption of the 14th amendment. The lecture will discuss the struggle for the adoption of the 14th amendment.
