Lecture Series – Aesthetic Value of Mathematics
In early December 2015, Dickeyville residents were treated to a fascinating presentation given by neighbor, Mel Currie on “The Aesthetic Value of Mathematics”
Lecture description – In general, mathematicians do not do mathematics simply because it is useful any more than poets devote themselves to their art so that they might be able to create good jingles for advertisements. Mathematics is done by many (perhaps most) mathematicians for its own sake.
This talk is directed towards a general audience and is self-contained. There is no need to cram beforehand. The hope is that the audience will be left with a greater appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the subject as well as for flesh-and-blood creatures, who call themselves mathematicians.
